YOUNG FU OF THE UPPER YANGTZE, by Elizabeth Foreman Lewis

Young Fu, an apprentice to a copper smith, learns many lessons through his foolishness, mischievousness and temptations. He learns how to deal with debt, gambling and keeping money safe. He loves his mother a lot and tries to keep her, himself and others safe in his new town. Two men: Tang, his master, and Wang scholar help him with meaningful encouragement and guidance through many of his mishaps. Together Young Fu and his friends live an amazing life. The end of the book is happy hearted, sweet, trustful and truthful. I would definitely recommend this book.
