THE BIG WAVE, by Pearl S. Buck

Kino and Jiya are best friends. When the old gentleman raises his red flag above his castle to warn everybody of the danger of a tidal wave about to strike, Kino, the son of a fisherman, is the only person to come within the gates for protection. Jiya, the son of a farmer, lives inside the walls and meets Kino at the gate. The wave comes, sweeping Kino's family and other fishermen into a sea of swirling death. Kino is heart broken, but Jiya and his family are now Kino's brothers and sisters. Kino never forgets his family, but he is still content with his new one. This is a sad but loving story. I highly recommend it.
